AME Mental Health Assessment for CAA Class I and Class II Certification
A mental health assessment will be undertaken by your AME as part of your initial Class I or Class II aero-medical examination. This assessment will screen for symptoms of conditions that might pose a threat to flight safety. Your AME will also complete further mental health assessments as part of revalidation or renewal Class I/II medical examination. As part of these mental health assessments you may be asked about current work and life stressors; your coping strategies under periods of psychological stress or pressure in the past; any difficulties with operational crew resource management (CRM), your employer, colleagues or managers and other relationship issues. If your AME identifies indications that you may signs or other evidence of a psychiatric or psychological condition, you will be referred for specialist opinion and advice.
Your Aviation Psychiatry Assessment - what to expect
Prior to your assessment you will be asked to provide relevant background medical and psychological records. Your Aviation Psychiatry Assessment will then take place in person or online via a secure video link. Face to face assessments are generally preferable for CAA purposes, particularly when there is a more complex background or ongoing symptoms. Please note that it is understandable if you feel somewhat anxious before such an assessment as this is a natural human response, but they are usually less stressful than people anticipate. You will be given the opportunity to describe your personal history in your own words and clarify any pertinent entries in your medical record. You will also be able to check your report for potential factual inaccuracies before it is sent off to yor AME.
